Look for wisdom like silver. Search for it like hidden treasure. If you do this, you will understand what it means to respect the Lord, and you will come to know God. – Proverbs 2:4-5
Devotion.
Perhaps the greatest heavyweight boxer in history was Muhammad Ali (born Cassius Clay). He might have been first to say that he didn’t win that title in the ring! He became the world champion every day, through lifting weights, jumping rope, and running hurdles. The ring was only the showplace where he proved that he was the better boxer. In the same manner, Mary Lou Retton became a world-renowned gymnast, and Michael Phelps the world’s fastest swimmer. Every day of their lives, they dedicated themselves to an uncompromising physical regimen, so when their competitions began, they were already champions.
Consider how much more imperative our battle is. We face the demanding challenges of child-rearing, the urgent requirement to witness, and the incessant war of good vs. evil. I think our competitions are not athletic, but spiritual, and infinitely more critical. We can’t wait until the moment of decision to begin the fight! Just like a professional athlete, Christians must live wholly dedicated lives to the Lord. Rise early to spend time in the Word of God because the enemy won’t wait for us to stop and study when we need a quick response to temptation. Without fail, spend time in fervent intercessory prayer, because someone’s very soul depends on it.
Many of us will never be world-famous athletes. However, we can still be champions! When your teenaged daughter asks about the provocative magazine covers she sees while standing in a grocery store line with you, her moral foundation may balance on your reply to her. If someone in your office asks for words of encouragement during a particularly disheartening experience, your comprehension of relevant Scripture verses can make an eternal difference.
We don’t need amazing physical prowess to be champions for our kids, neighbors and coworkers. All we need is a passion to follow Jesus, to search for His wisdom, and to live by His words.
Through Him who loves us, we are more than conquerors!
