“When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.” – John 8:44 NKJV
Devotion
The devil is an enemy who comes against us. In 1 Peter 5:8, the Apostle Peter says that the devil is an adversary who “walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” One of the ways that he comes against us is with lies. The reason that he uses lies is that he can’t help himself. Jesus said that he lies because he “does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him” (John 8:44). By nature, the devil tries to devour us with lies.
Given the lying nature of the devil, we should not listen to him. What does the devil lie about? Anything that comes out of his mouth is a lie, but he is especially given to lying about the truth of the Gospel and the word of God in general. The scribes and the Pharisees could not receive the Gospel message from Jesus because they were children of the devil and they believed the lies of their father (John 8:42-43). They had been devoured by the devil and his lies.
How can we know when the devil is lying to us? Anything that undermines the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the Word of God in general is a lie from the enemy. If a word comes to us that is not in harmony with God’s Word, even if it is a word in our own minds, then we know that the devil is coming against us with a lie in an attempt to devour us. The devil is always roaming about trying to come up with good lies that will fool us.
How can we protect ourselves from the lies of the devil? We need to know the Word of God and especially the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul said that the Word of God is “the sword of the spirit” (Ephesians 6:17). When we know the Word, we can use it as a weapon to defeat the lies of the devil. We can quote the truth of the Word against the lies of the enemy.
Although the devil is like a lion, he is nothing compared to the “lion of the tribe of Judah” (Revelation 5:5). In Jesus, and through His Word, we can overcome the lies of the enemy.
