If a nation is not guided by God, the people will lose self-control, but the nation that obeys God’s law will be happy. – Proverbs 29:18 ERV
No matter who you vote for, or even if you don’t (or perhaps can’t) vote, you can pray for your country’s politics. Pray that your political leaders be led by God’s teachings and pray that you and your fellow citizens be respectful to one another as you disagree about political issues.
The King James Version of this verse is popular and cited often. Instead of “the people will lose self-control,” it says, “the people perish.” This translation has produced positive thoughts about how to be a good and active citizen, but the Easy-to-Read Version (ERV) of the Bible is much more accurate and closer to the original Hebrew.
If a country is not guided by God, it is not the case that the nation will automatically die. Rather, God will allow nations to try to guide themselves, like the blind leading the blind. But this self-guidance always results in a social breakdown. A nation where people do not love their neighbors is a nation that will become unhinged.
Pray that you and your neighbors commit to loving each other, even if they voted for the other person.
