If you love me, obey my commandments. – John 14:15 NLT
Devotion
In our world of instant gratification, long-term obedience and discipline aren’t the norm. Our culture tells us that we can have anything in the blink of an eye—a package at our door in less than 48 hours, a beach body in two weeks, the latest news stories and updates almost instantly.
We are conditioned to get everything we want when we want it.
But obeying Jesus isn’t like free two-day delivery. Yes, sometimes God answers prayers and brings change within minutes, hours, or days. He’s able to act in an instant. But so often we are required to wait weeks, months, even years, without an “answer.” We may pray for someone’s salvation, for health, for reconciliation in a marriage and, to be frank, those things may never happen.
Even when we don’t see the answer or progress we expect, we are still called to obey. Obedience is a discipline. I’m reminded of the farmer in 2 Timothy who “works hard and deserves the first part of the harvest” (2 Timothy 1:6 ERV). He wakes up every morning to take care of his crops. Every single day he works his fingers to the bone, but he doesn’t see the fruits of his labor for months. He doesn’t give up because his plants aren’t growing right away. He patiently and diligently works, knowing his dedication will pay off eventually.
For Christians, we are called to have faith and hope when things seem hopeless, to prioritize learning and following the Word of God, to love others no matter the circumstance, to pray through every situation.
But even when we do obey these commands, it’s so easy to get discouraged when we don’t see things changing or we feel like we aren’t getting answers. The enemy tricks us with questions: Why bother to continue? Is God even listening? Nothing’s really happening, is it?
But here’s the thing: something is happening. In every step of obedience, the Lord is shaping us into exactly who we were created to be. In the everyday moments of life, we may not see the changes. But, when we look back on those long seasons of obedience, we see what God has really been doing all along. Through obedience, we become faithful. We become disciplined. We become humble. We become dependent. We become persistent. We become patient.
Through obedience, we became more like Jesus. And isn’t that really what we should be striving for?
To anyone in the midst of a long season of obedience, a season that feels drawn out and discouraging, don’t stop obeying. God has witnessed every single step of obedience you’ve taken, and even if you don’t see the fruits right now, it doesn’t mean your faithfulness has gone unnoticed. He will strengthen you to keep going. He will guide you in every step. And He will be pleased with your obedience.
