Scripture
By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. – 1 John 5:2-3 ESV
Devotion
They say if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. If you love your career, chances are you don’t wake up dreading the day ahead, but rather excited to start it! This doesn’t mean you have an easy job and don’t face challenges—it just means your job is not a burden. In the same way, following the commands of God don’t have to be a burden, but a delight, even when difficult.
Our verse for today says it should not be a burden to follow the commands of God or to love people. There should be delight as we consider the Ten Commandments and how it’s our privilege as people of God to follow them. The first section of the Ten Commandments gives us delight in loving and following God. The second part of the Ten Commandments shows us how we can delight in loving God’s people.
As you go through this week what could it look like for you to delight in loving and following God? In loving and following people?
How can you reshape your mentality to see these things as a privilege? In what way can you avoid huffing, groaning, scoffing, and complaining? Who can you ask to hold you accountable in making this change this week?
