Today’s crime news: A Florida thief tried a novel way to hide evidence of a jewel heist by swallowing $770,000 worth of stolen Tiffany earrings.

TAKEOFF.
Supreme Court Orders Aid Payments.
The Supreme Court ordered the White House to unfreeze $2 billion in payments to foreign aid organizations for work already performed.
The 5-4 decision upheld a lower court order, and directed the case back to the district court to clarify any additional details on payment.
Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh dissented, with Alito writing that a district-court judge shouldn’t have “the unchecked power to compel the government.”
Administration officials are expected to appear in court today to discuss plausible repayment schedules.
U.S. Negotiated with Hamas Directly.
The White House confirmed Wednesday that a special U.S. envoy has engaged in unprecedented negotiations directly with Hamas and has President Trump’s authority to “talk to anyone.”
Sources indicate that the envoy, led by Adam Boehler, recently met with Hamas officials in Doha. The U.S. has never previously engaged directly with Hamas, which has been designated a terrorist organization since 1997.
Israel reportedly learned of the meeting through “other channels” but had discussed the possibility of U.S. talks with Hamas before Wednesday’s announcement.
President Trump referred to the effort as his final warning to Hamas, urging the group to release all remaining hostages immediately, “OR THERE WILL BE HELL TO PAY LATER!”
Storms Batter U.S. with Tornadoes, Snow.
A powerful storm system has swept across the United States since Monday, resulting in at least three fatalities in Mississippi.
In Oklahoma, tornadoes caused significant structural damage, including the destruction of a veterinary clinic’s roof in Hugo (see video here), while the Midwest faced blizzard conditions, with heavy snowfall and numerous traffic incidents reported.
A massive dust storm in New Mexico led to near-zero visibility, vehicle accidents, and road closures (video here), while high winds and dry conditions have sparked wildfires in Texas, notably in San Patricio County.
As the storm system advances eastward, over 64 million people from Florida to New York are under severe weather alerts.
POLITICS.
The Trump administration granted automakers Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis a one-month tariff exemption to prevent economic disadvantage to the car industry.
The IRS plans to reduce its 90,000-person workforce by half through layoffs and buyouts, with some employees reassigned to Homeland Security to assist with immigration enforcement, sources say.
Mohammad Sharifullah, the suspected mastermind of the 2021 Abbey Gate bombing that killed 13 U.S. service members, was extradited into federal custody and is now awaiting a Monday hearing.

This work was first published in weekly installments over a twenty-year span in the London Metropolitan Tabernacle’s periodical, The Sword and the Trowel.
Completed sections were released volume by volume, until the seventh and final volume was released in 1885. Within a decade more than 120,000 sets had been sold. The Treasury of David is a superb literary achievement. Eric Hayden, pastor of the Metropolitan Tabernacle a century after Spurgeon’s ministry began there, calls this work “Spurgeon’s magnum opus.” Spurgeon’s wife said that if Spurgeon had never written any other work, this would have been a permanent literary memorial.
