Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life. – Proverbs 4:23 ESV
Devotion
This is a very special verse to my heart. I have a wooden magnet plate at the door of my fridge with this verse. It helps me to see this verse multiple times during the day to remember these words of wisdom, not as much in my mind, but in my heart.
The region where I grew up is filled with small, clean fresh springs of water that comes from the heart of the mountain. Every time we would walk around the hills or towards the mountain, we planned our stops exactly at the spot where these springs were found. We would take a rest, refresh, and get new energy to continue our walk up the rocky, hard trails straight to the top.
Our heart is a big warehouse of goals and desires. These are the treasures that we all collect inside our hearts and these are also the treasures that predetermined the stops and rests on the journey of our lives. What kind of treasures have you collected inside your heart? Are those clean and refreshing to your soul? Or maybe they are treasures that have started to make your soul tired and heavy?
The Word of wisdom tells us to guard our heart, and we all know how difficult that is. But has God left us to fulfill this hard task by ourselves? No! “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you” (John 14:16-17).
God has never left us alone. The Advocate and the Spirit of Truth is not just a spirit of making us feel good and accepted by God. It is a Spirit full of power that will empower us! “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” (Acts 1:8).
Guarding your heart consists in staying with God, filling our Spirit with the Holy Spirit that comes to us through the Word of God. If our heart is filled with desires according the will of God, then our heart will be a spring of water where we rest, refresh, and get new energy to continue our walk of life, even when that walk looks like a difficult mountain trail filled with rocks. But every time we make it to the top, we will see that amazing, magnificent view with an indescribable pleasure of achievement. We would never reach that point without the help of the springs on the way.

Completed sections were released volume by volume, until the seventh and final volume was released in 1885. Within a decade more than 120,000 sets had been sold. The Treasury of David is a superb literary achievement. Eric Hayden, pastor of the Metropolitan Tabernacle a century after Spurgeon’s ministry began there, calls this work “Spurgeon’s magnum opus.” Spurgeon’s wife said that if Spurgeon had never written any other work, this would have been a permanent literary memorial.
