Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. – Matthew 5:6 ESV
Devotion
Think about when you are hungry or thirsty. There is a drive in getting the need met, and satisfaction when the need is met. Scripture often illustrates God calling us to hunger and thirst for Him. Jesus calls Himself the Bread of Life (John 6:35-58). It is the deep yearning within that desires to be known, fulfilled, and accepted. The hunger and thirst that keeps us pursuing God. The hunger and thirst that can only be satisfied by God.
“As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul longs after You, O God” (Psalm 42:1). Do you feel the intensity? Do you sense the intimacy? It’s the very essence of who we are and whom we were created for. “Taste and see that the Lord is good” (Psalm 34:8). The invitation to discover the riches of God. “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come into him and eat with him, and he with me” (Revelation 3:20). All of these Bible verses speak to the shared fellowship we can have with our Savior.
Oh, that our souls would hunger and thirst and long for the living God. He promises,” You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13). Our God is approachable. He is the God who pursues us and loves us.
We can only know this wonderful God through His Son Jesus Christ. His Word is filled with luscious truths, invitations to be explored, and that produces within us an insatiable quest to experience His presence. I think we must come hungry. Hungry to know Him, and in our hunger, submissive to obey His commands.
On this journey there will be many disappointments—but through Christ, we can and will persevere. Let our hearts hunger and thirst after God and His righteousness.
